Peer Education is proud to employ over 100 undergraduate Peer Tutors.

Individuals who tutor through Peer Education come from a variety of academic backgrounds and majors but share a common passion for serving their peers and the UGA community through knowledge sharing, encouragement, and academic support.

Peer Tutors are selected through a competitive application process and materials are reviewed regularly based on changes in tutoring demand and staffing.

Pay

Peer Tutors receive $14/hour, course credit for the UNIV 1204 pedagogy course, CRLA accreditation and experiential learning credit (depending on school/college).

Peer Tutor Responsibilities

  • Provide academic support to students in approved courses and subject areas through individual and small-group tutoring sessions.
  • Facilitate student learning by helping students understand course concepts, develop problem-solving skills, and strengthen their academic confidence.
  • Guide students in developing effective study strategies, note-taking skills, test preparation techniques, and active learning practices.
  • Foster an inclusive, supportive, and encouraging learning environment.
  • Assist students in becoming independent learners by promoting critical thinking and self-directed learning.
  • Maintain accurate tutoring records and complete required documentation.
  • Recognize when a student’s needs extend beyond the scope of peer tutoring and make appropriate referrals to campus resources.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with Office of Active Learning staff and fellow Peer Tutors to support student success.

Job Requirements:

  • Enroll in and complete UNIV 1204 (a one-hour institutional credit course) within your first semester of being a Peer Tutor (unless you have already completed UNIV 1204).
    • By taking this training course, you will receive tutor accreditation through the College Reading and Learning Association.
    • Students cannot register for the course prior to being hired as a Peer Tutor.
  • Work anywhere from 8 to 20 hours/week.
  • Maintain a consistent tutoring schedule throughout the semester.
  • Maintain eligibility requirements established by the Office of Active Learning throughout employment.

To Qualify to become a Peer Tutor You Must:

  • Demonstrate academic excellence.
  • Have completed at least one semester of classes at UGA.
  • Tutor a minimum of 5 courses and/or 3 subjects.
  • Obtain a faculty recommendation for each subject area in which you are applying.
  • Demonstrate strong content knowledge in the courses and/or subject areas for which you are applying.
  • Possess strong interpersonal communication and active listening skills.
  • Demonstrate the ability to explain concepts clearly, patiently, and effectively to students with varying learning needs.
  • Be able to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries when working with students.

Apply to become a Peer Tutor

If you are interested in becoming a Peer Tutor for the upcoming semester, please apply a semester in advance. For example, we hire Fall Peer Tutors at the end of the Spring semester.

All application materials are kept on hand one year from application date for future consideration.

Please note, all application materials must be submitted online via the link below.

  • Complete the below Peer Tutor application
  • Seek a faculty or teaching assistant recommendation for each of the subjects to be tutored
    • Instructors will be emailed directly with a link to complete their reference form once your application has been completed

Students do not need a separate recommendation for each course. However separate recommendations are required for each subject. A recommendation from a Math instructor would be sufficient for MATH 1101 and MATH 1113. However, a student interested in tutoring Chemistry and Biology courses would need separate recommendations from an instructor in each of those departments.

Lead Peer Tutors

The Peer Tutoring program also offers a leadership opportunity for experienced Peer Tutors through the Lead Peer Tutor role. Lead Peer Tutors continue supporting students through tutoring while also mentoring other Peer Tutors, assisting with training and interviews, and promoting Peer Education services across campus.

To be eligible, students must have served as a Peer Tutor for at least two semesters and demonstrate strong leadership, professionalism, and communication skills. Lead Tutors typically commit an additional 1–2 hours per week to support mentoring and outreach efforts.

What to Expect from Peer Tutoring

During a peer tutoring session, whether it’s a one-on-one appointment or a study pod, you will engage with a Peer Tutor to find solutions to problems, learn best practices for studying course material, and gain a deeper understanding of the course content. In order to benefit the most from a peer tutoring session, you will need to come prepared with material and questions that you would like to discuss with a Peer Tutor.

Tutoring Expectations

To ensure a productive and respectful learning environment, students participating in peer tutoring are expected to:

  • Come prepared to engage with the material. Peer Tutors will guide your learning, but they will not provide answers.
  • Help maintain a focused learning environment by being respectful of others and stepping away for non-course-related conversations as needed.
  • Stay on top of coursework outside of tutoring. Reviewing material in advance and preparing questions will help you get the most out of your session.

What Can a Peer Tutor Help Me With?

Peer Tutors can help with:

  • Ungraded homework assignments
  • Exams or quizzes that have already been graded
  • Practice problems and review materials

Peer Tutors cannot help with:

  • Graded assignments
  • Take-home exams or quizzes
  • Test or assignment revisions that would result in extra credit
  • Any assignment specifically designed to assess individual student knowledge
    • *Exceptions may apply if otherwise communicated by the Coordinator of Peer Education.

Participation in Peer Education services is subject to University of Georgia Academic Honesty guidelines and the Code of Conduct. Failure to comply with applicable university policies may result in restrictions on participation in Peer Education services.

Our program and Peer Educators are accredited through the College Reading and Learning Association which recognizes effective approaches to student learning.
