Universal Design of Active Learning

Universal Design for Active Learning
UDL and active learning share a common goal: centering all students in the learning experience. When designing an activity, UDL‑informed instructors consider how the activity could be open to all students while preserving the core learning goal.

Physical Considerations
If handwriting is not required, allow students to type their journal entry.

Timing & Pacing
Inform students of the activity before the lecture so they can identify their word during engagement — not under end-of-class time pressure.

Social Interaction
Keep the journal private unless sharing is voluntarily scaffolded. Consider pair share as a low-stakes option before whole-class discussion.

Information Accessibility
Allow reference to the reading or lecture notes — focus stays on reflection and meaning-making, not recall.

Ways to Participate/Express
Allow written, typed, or audio submission explaining the chosen word and its significance.
