The Division of Academic Enhancement (DAE) offers courses under the UNIV prefix that help equip UGA students to become intentional and independent lifelong active learners.

UNIV 1202: Becoming Active Leaders

Course Description: In this 1-credit hour course, students will develop skills to be successful active learners within a variety of instructional modalities. Students will learn to engage peers and instructors, embrace collaborative learning and study groups, reflect on their progress and strategies, and adapt based on self-reflection and results.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  • Capitalize on a personal understanding of the culture and expectations of higher education, particularly those of a research university
  • Engage in self-motivation practices to maintain interest in academic content given common instructional modalities in college (lecture, online, seminar) 
  • Maintain behavioral, psychological, and affective engagement in common educational delivery modalities (small and large-group discussion, game-based learning environments, student-led seminars) 
  • Engage active learning strategies conducive to success in specific content-courses 
  • Thrive in out-of-class active learning strategies conducive to success in specific content courses (group projects, case studies) 
UNIV 1204: Preparing for Peer Learning

Course Description: This 1-credit hour course is restricted to those who serve as peer tutors and peer learning assistants through the Division of Academic Enhancement. In this course, students learn the skills characteristic of peer instruction, explore relevant research and evidence-based practices, and create a dialogue on peer-to-peer learning at the University.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  • Evaluate and apply metacognitive learning strategies to your learning 
  • Illustrate the different approaches to learning and identify the mechanisms to support your learning and the learning of your peers
  • Effectively communicate ideas, thoughts, and knowledge to your peers to support their learning 
  • Identify and explain the appropriate academic and non-academic campus resources to your peers depending on the circumstances/situations they disclose
