Active Learning Leader Certificate Pathways

The Active Learning Leader Certificate pathways build fundamental knowledge of active learning across the broad instructor population. The Active Learning Leader Certificate can be earned through two distinct but complementary pathways.

Pathway 1: Active Learning Summer Institute (ALSI)

The Center for Teaching and Learning hosts the Active Learning Summer Institute. Open to all full-time faculty, this intensive course (re)design institute promotes increased student engagement and success by implementing active learning techniques.

During the three-week institute, participants in daily sessions will discuss active learning pedagogy and other evidence-based teaching practices, workshops will explore pedagogical techniques, and the institute will offer structured work time where faculty will progress on their course design.

By the end of the institute, participating faculty can design interactive instructional, assessment, and learning technology strategies that foster ongoing student engagement, motivation, and reflection.

Once the institute is complete, faculty will work independently and with consultant partners to finalize their courses for implementation throughout the subsequent academic year. Faculty selected to participate will receive $7,500 for successful completion of the institute. Learn More

Pathway 2: Active Learning Workshops + Active Learning Course Redesign

Workshops Series

For instructors looking for flexible, a la carte-style training in active learning pedagogy, the Center for Teaching and Learning offers a workshop series throughout the fall and spring semesters. Instructors can take four introductory workshops on active learning and eight additional courses on special topics closely associated with active learning. Moreover, Although the workshops are numbered to help you track your participation, you can complete these workshops in any order you wish (note: Not all workshops are offered each semester)… Learn more

Course Redesign Excellence Program

Once instructors have completed the multi-session AL workshops, the Active Learning Course Redesign provides additional support for instructors who wish to apply their active learning knowledge to a course they will teach in the upcoming academic year. The Course Redesign program is open to faculty instructors of record only, and an application process will identify ten candidates per Active Learning Course Redesign cycle. Instructors in the program will redesign a course over a semester (~16 weeks) with the support and guidance of CTL personnel during formal sessions and consultative appointments. Instructors who complete the AL Course Redesign experience will each receive a $5,000 stipend, eligible for use as salary or operating expenses.

Instructors who complete a minimum of eight Active Learning workshops, including all four Active Learning Fundamentals workshops and a selection of four Special Topics in Active Learning workshops, will be eligible to apply for the Course Redesign Experience (launching in Spring 2025, call for applications to be announced in Fall 2024)… Learn more
